What’s a highly profitable—and painless—way to raise money for Whittier School PTA? Participate in Shopping with Benefits! Shopping with Benefits, or Scrip, provides gift cards for stores where we shop every day, and work just like cash.
Gift cards aren’t only for gifts: use them where you shop for gas, groceries, clothing, coffee, dinner, movies, and more! You also can purchase a personal gift using a gift card. Don’t forget to order gift cards in advance for teachers and coaches!
Scrip is a term that means “substitute money.” When Whittier families and friends purchase scrip, they’re purchasing negotiable gift cards that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by national and local retailers where many of us already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. You can use scrip to make everyday purchases like food, clothing, gas, and other essentials, and with every purchase, the Whittier PTA retains a percentage of each dollar to support our programs and activities.
The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Whittier PTA buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at full face value. The bulk of the discount – from two to fifteen percent or more (varies by retailer) is shared with the Whittier PTA by Great Lakes Scrip.
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends between one and two million dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip for these purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their organization –without spending an additional penny.
Families who purchase scrip certificates actively support the retailers who participate in this program. The reason is simple… they know that buying from a scrip participating retailer provides a steady source of revenue for their church, school, or non-profit organization.
Your participation in this program is completely optional. For most families it takes a bit of pre-planning as it is a pay up-front scenario as opposed to paying later, like credit cards. Given the economic situation at present, less reliance on credit cards may actually be a pro if you are considering whether or not this will work for your family.
Thank you for reviewing this information. It seems like a lot to digest, but it really is a simple way to raise funds for our children and school without spending any additional dollars. We welcome orders from family and friends so please spread this information freely!
