1. WRECK

NEW: WRECK for 5th and 6th Grade Students!

WRECK (Whittier Robotics and Engineering Club for Kids) is an amazing amount of fun and also a great way to learn interesting engineering and robotics concepts (without even realizing it!). For those not familiar, WRECK is a PTA run program and is offered to 3rd through 6th graders. Utilizing Lego WeDo kits (3rd and 4th) and new Lego EV3 Mindstorms kits (5th and 6th), we will give interested boys and girls an introduction to robotics and programming. The classes will start with learning basic principles and will culminate in a final project that should be challenging and rewarding. No prior experience required!

Registration is open for Session 2 (5th and 6th Grade) and is limited to 16 students. It starts on January 22nd and classes are Tuesdays 6:30 – 7:30. See HERE for all of the details and to register.

2. Fun Lunch

It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year!
Time to think about taking off all the Fun Lunch Fridays beginning in January and going aaaaaaaaaallllllllll the way through May 2019.
From December 10th through 22nd you can log in at www.boonli.com and place your children’s lunch orders. There are 11 planned dates to order for each child.
We are very excited to offer a new vendor–Mission Barbecue–to our array of outstanding lunch providers.
Note: the ordering window WILL close on the 22nd and all orders must be placed before midnight on that date.
Please reach out to Karrie Donat (karrie313@gmail.com) or Stacy Klepper (stacyklepper17@gmail.com) if you have any questions.
Happy ordering!

3.Whittier Angel Families Mittens

Every year our PTA works with Mr. Krugman to collect holiday wishlists for our Whittier Angel families. This is a wonderful opportunity to help make the holidays a little brighter for some our Whittier friends and neighbors!.
HOW DO I HELP?
-Pull a paper mitten from the vestibule in the main entrance at school. Currently there are a handful of mittens remaining. Details of a Whittier child’s or family member’s holiday wish will be on the mitten.
-Have fun shopping with your family for the items on your mitten!
-Deliver the unwrapped gifts to the main office no later than MONDAY, DECEMBER 17th. We will then sort the gifts accordingly and provide parents with gift wrapping supplies. Be sure to keep your dropped off items covered so students don’t see in case they are a recipient.
-The school office will also happily accept any gift card donations for the families
Please contact Laura Hill or Joanne Brock if you have any questions! Every year our Angel families are overwhelmed with our community’s generosity and giving spirit with this continued program.  Thank you in advance to those who are able to participate!

4. Variety Show Application

You may now submit your Variety Show Act/Emcee/Stage Crew application!  Deadline is January 14th for both the applications AND permission slips.  Only 1 application needs to be submitted per act/crew member, however ALL participants (performers, emcees, and stage crew) need a permission slip.
For acts being submitted, please fill out as much detail as you can, however we do realize some things may not be finalized yet.  Once details become nailed down and/or things change (participants, music, props, etc) please send an email to the team at WhittierVarietyShow@gmail.com, or directly to Ann Russell at AnnKHerrick@yahoo.com.

5. Six Flags Read To Succeed Program

Whittier will once again be participating in the Six Flag’s Read to Succeed Program. Students who read 6 hours and complete the Student Reading Log will earn a free ticket to Six Flags Great America. This incentive program will run the month of December. Student Reading Logs will be due to the classroom teacher Wednesday, January 9th though can be turned in as soon as the 6 hours have been logged.

6. Volunteer Liaison Request

The PTA is in search of volunteers to attend our general meetings and relay the information discussed back to their child’s classroom parents so everyone can hear what took place at the meeting.  There are only four additional meetings for the school year so the time commitment is minimal!  If interested in helping out please email Jenn DiCosola at jennbala@hotmail.com or Susan Lorenc at susan_lorenc@hotmail.com

7. Chess Scholars Winter Session

Registration is still open for Chess Scholars although the early bird registration window has passed. Classes are held after school on Monday.

CLICK HERE for the flier and registration instructions.

8. Young Rembrandts Winter Session (Volunteer Needed!)

Registration for the winter session of Young Rembrandts is open! Classes are held after school on Tuesdays at Whittier.  First class is 1/8. Cost is $110 for an 11 week session.

YB is in need of a second volunteer to share in the responsibility of monitoring the classes.  Please email Rachel Carrero at rachel.carrero@gmail.com if interested in helping out!  You will receive a discount on your child’s tuition for your time.  Whittier requires an in-class volunteer for all after school classes so without your help we cannot offer this class!
