New for this year: Dancing Lights!
A COVID-friendly WRECK inspired activity for all
(with a little parental help)
Sign up has closed.
Since we are unable to host the traditional WRECK Robotics class this year, we will be hosting an online class that will take kids step by step through the process of creating their own set of dancing lights! These lights will be programmed by the students to flash, chase, blink and dance in any ways they can imagine. Since this will be online and a much shorter program than usual, this will be open to all grade levels, but those in K-3rd should have adult supervision (and they will probably need your help too). For kids in 4th through 6th grade, I expect they will be able to work through this independently, but they may need some help getting set up.
The PTA will provide a kit for $30 with everything needed except for a computer. You will also need to have a wireless home network for this to work. Feel free to order as many as you need for your family.
The sign-up will be posted here (and that will also include an option to pay for the kits online). Before signing up, please read through the requirements to make sure you have a computer capable of programming the lights.
Zoom invites will be emailed before the class.
WRECK will be available to 3rd through 6th grade students!
WRECK (Whittier Robotics and Engineering Club for Kids) is an amazing amount of fun and also a great way to learn interesting engineering and robotics concepts (without even realizing it!). For those not familiar, WRECK is a PTA run program and is offered to 3rd through 6th graders. Utilizing Lego WeDo kits (3rd and 4th) and Lego EV3 Mindstorms kits (5th and 6th), we will give interested boys and girls an introduction to robotics and programming. The classes will start with learning basic principles and will culminate in a final project that should be challenging and rewarding. The kits for the 5th and 6th graders are the same as those used at Herrick for their robotics club so the students will be primed to continue this journey into middle school.
